2014 SE Camp Highlights
Read below a write-up on some of the highlights from MNMS School Club Advisor Raidah Noohu: Empathy. Passion. Innovation. Drive. These are some of the ideas that young leaders focused on at the My Name My Story Entrepreneurship Camp for young Change Makers at Chaminade’s Center for Excellence. During the camp, students learned about Social Entrepreneurship by participating in workshops lead by youth guest speakers including Winter Vineki (Team Winter); Lulu Cerone, (Lemonaid Warriors); Carter Jenkins (Students for Safe Water) and Amit Dodani (MNMS, Class of ’15.) Adult speakers included Joey Katona, Lennon Flowers and Mike Marriner from Ashoka; and Joseph Shamash from the One Wish Project and several others from the MNMS team. Each speaker shared his or her own story; encouraging the campers to follow their passions and turn their interests into beneficial action. “Empathy is not a mindset, not just a feeling” camper Hannah Sellfors said. “Empathy is action through understanding other people and that has really shaped me.” Students broke out into small groups and identified social ventures (like Eye to Eye and the Amazon Conservation Association) that are currently taking on global issues. They researched each organization, identifying the problem, solution, team, and impacts that each one addressed and presented them to the group as their own- allowing them to really engage with the skills and concepts at the heart of social entrepreneurship: Empathy, Storytelling, Teamwork, Leadership and Service . The camp also gave students the opportunity to get comfortable communicating their ideas and learn what it takes to be a successful social entrepreneur. Participating in self discovery activities and listening to discussions helped students to open up with one another and tell their individual stories. “I gained the confidence to speak out and share my ideas with other people. And I feel like this camp really helped me meet new friends and get to know more people” Jaidin Tharaenee said. The camp concluded with workshops about current social entrepreneurs who have rooted their organizations in empathy and what it means to be a change maker. “The best thing I learned at this camp is the definition of empathy and really, what it means to be a social entrepreneur. I have learned so much at this camp that will make me a better person…” said campers Alec Simoni and Nikhil Chakravarty. Although the students were saddened by the close of camp, they felt ready to take action in the world and share what they had learned throughout the four days. The friendships and connections made at the camp were evident between the students and everyone came away with a better idea of the kind of entrepreneur they aimed to become. “I’ve learned what it is not to just understand someone’s feelings but to actually feel for them. I know now that if you have friends, if you have the support and team you need, the impact can be so crazy!” said Sanaz Tamjidi. Overall, students all gained a new insight and learned to be empathetic of others around them while discovering new ways to turn their passion into action. |

Winter Vinecki , 15
Team Winter, Founder An ambitious young athlete, 15-year old Winter Vinecki has been making waves in the sport of triathlon, running and skiing. She is currently training for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Racing in these sports since the age of five, her competitive spirit has compelled her to be the best. By the age of nine, she found herself competing in an Olympic Distance triathlon; a distance usually reserved for seasoned adult triathletes. Winter initially had thoughts of racing as a means of bringing light to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. This all changed one spring morning in 2008. Winter found her true cause in which to race for, founding Team Winter (501 (c) 3) to honor her dad who died of prostate cancer. Today, the growth of Winter, as an athlete and Team Winter as an organization is exponential. She Winter currently has her goals set on the 2018 Winter Olympics as an aerial skier and lives and trains at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, UT. She uses running, triathlons and now obstacle course racing to help cross train and make her be the best athlete possible. |
Carter Jenkins, 17
Students for Safe Water, Founder. Carter calls him self an “accidental activist” when he created Students For Safe Water. Their goal is to educate students, teachers and the general public about the world water crisis and to raise awareness about the way to help save the lives of those in need by providing clean, safe water and basic sanitation to those living without. By encouraging youth participation, he has raised over $60,000 to build water and sanitation projects in the developing world. Carter has been nationally recognized for his effort and speaks regularly in front of youth groups, community leaders, Rotary Clubs and was even invited to speak at TedxRedmond. |
Lulu Cerone, 15
LemonAIDWarriors, Founder Lulu created LemonAID Warriors to empower youth in her community to make a difference. Her first event was a boys vs. girls LemonAID war to benefit Haiti. This concept spread across the country and more than 500 kids ordered LemonAID kits to raise funds and the events raised $4,000 in two weeks. She has since organized community events, called “PhilanthroParties,” to inspire her peers to get involved. She has raised $32,000 through her philanthro-parties and another $30,000 for sustainable water projects in Africa through backyard concerts and her annual Water Walk, when she rallies friends to collect pledges and walk two miles carrying gallon jugs of water, just as many kids in Africa must do every day. Lulu has also co-produced and hosted a weekly radio show, spotlighting a fundraising “Warrior of the Week.” Several months ago, toy giant Mattel invited Lulu to partner with them in sharing her concept with millions of their Monster High brand fans, ages 7 to 14. She has helped Mattel create a “Ghouls Helping Ghouls” campaign and a “skullership” program, where girls post their philanthro-parties online for a chance to win $1,000 for their favorite charity. Mattel has even created a Monster High animated character named BOO-Lu Cerone, a LemonAID Warrior and “ghost-who-gives-back.” |
Mike Marriner, Roadtrip Nation, Founder The team at Roadtrip Nation are helping students to “define their own roads in life” by exposing them to an unlimited number of careers and pathways they would not otherwise know about, and equipping them with the tools and skills they need to make those pathways a reality. |
